Cooperation by geographical areas

BRAZIL

Exchanges between INRIA and Brazil have been going on for 20 years. They have been particularly fruitful on 2 subjects: numerical methods and fondamental computer science.
On numerical methods, INRIA has collaborated with COPPE from the Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), with Pontificia Universidade Catolica de Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ) and with Laboratorio de Computaçao Cientifica (LCC) from the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq). LCC is also member of the MODULEF Club and as such has been able to benefit from the programmes gathered thereby.
In fondamental computer science, a durable partnership has been established with COPPE/UFRJ, the Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME) in Rio de Janeiro and the Universidade de Sao Paulo (USP).
In addition INRIA is heavily involved since 1984 in different courses, conferences and summer schools being held in Brazil. Eight summer schools have taken place since 1984 on the following subjects:
1984 :
finite elements and their application to fluid mechanics (LCC/CNPq , co-organized by INRIA) ,
1985 :
numerical methods using MODULEF, (LCC/CNPq - PUC),
logical programming, (COPPE/UFRJ)
modelling computer systems, (Univ. de Sao Paulo),
1986 :
optimisation methods and applications (COPPE/UFRJ),
1987 :
theoretical and applied mechanics, ( LCC/CNPq),
1990 :
MODULEF (LCC/CNPq),
1991 :
finite elements and their application to fluid mechanics, LCC/CNPq.
The content of these schools has been regularly published.
In addition, the Centre for Technical Integration of Parana was helped in establishing a basic computer science curriculum
. Nowadays, almost a dozen projects are running financed by the French Ministry for Foreign Affairs. For a detailed list see "current research lines".

The Brazilian CNPq has recently launched an initiative encouraging researchers to present their thesis in foreign countries. INRIA and CNPq are thus about to sign an agreement that would give a better visibility to the on-going fruitful cooperation.
